Bamboo Media Cabinet
Credits: Designer, Builder
At college I took a wonderful class in the history of product design. We saw hundreds of slides of all kinds of objects. But it was the furniture design of the mid-century masters and their notion of doing more with less that interested me most.
The history class sparked my interest but it was my empty apartment that ultimately inspired me to take up furniture design as a hobby. I designed and built this bamboo plywood cabinet to hold dvds, books, and tapes. The top portion of the cabinet features sliding doors for easy access. The bottom doors hide long term storage items.
I chose bamboo plywood for this project for a couple reasons. Bamboo grows rapidly and is very renewable. It also has a bold graphic quality due to its sandwiched layer construction. This effect can be seen clearly in the detail photo of the shelf.
